A new laser developed by the Slovenian high-tech medical laser company Optotek was recognized among the most successful achievements in Slovenia
The Slovenian high-tech medical-laser company Optotek has developed a new laser combining two compatible laser wavelengths, offering the option for treating two types of eye diseases, posterior capsule opacification (PCO) and open-angle glaucoma. After the expiration of a US patent last year that prevented entry into the market of open-angle glaucoma treatments, the company managed to develop technological innovations enabling them to enter the US market. This new solution is also protected at the European Patent Office. The Slovenian company Optotek, owned by Canon, maintains about a 15 percent global market share of lasers for treating eye diseases. Due to the success of a new laser introduced last year, an increase of 31 percent was achieved, yielding seven million euros of income, and about half a million in profit resulting from ordinary activities. This led to the employment of 13 new people. An average 15-percent growth of revenue since 2004 is also expected for this year, and will allow for further employment growth. The company is also working on development of a diode pumped laser, which represents a new approach in laser technology since only flash-lamp pumping lasers are currently present on the market. This new approach will introduce smaller, more stable, efficient and more robust lasers to the market.

The United Nations proclaims an International Year of Light in 2015
The United Nations (UN) General Assembly 68th Session during its 71st Plenary Meeting proclaimed 2015 as the International Year of Light and Light-based Technologies (IYL 2015). In proclaiming an International Year focusing on the topic of light science and its applications, the United Nations has recognized the importance of raising global awareness of how light-based technologies promote sustainable development and provide solutions to global challenges in energy, education, agriculture and health. Indeed, the resolution was adopted as part of a more general Agenda item on Science and technology for development. This International Year will bring together many different stakeholders including UNESCO, scientific societies and unions, educational and research institutions, technology platforms, non-profit organizations and private sector partners to promote and celebrate the significance of light and its applications during 2015.
